The winners of the National Volunteer Week competition run by Volunteer Whanganui were yesterday treated to a slap-up lunch with mayor Hamish McDouall.
Thanking them for their contribution, Mr McDouall said the work of volunteers was invaluable.
"This district runs on volunteerism. It's our lifeblood. So many people work somany hours and it's inconceivable what would happen if we took away that effort and time."
During Volunteer Week, the Whanganui community was invited to share stories of their volunteer work. The five entrants who were judged as making the most outstanding contributions were treated to lunch with the mayor, with overall winner Vivienne Jones receiving a 40-inch Panasonic Smart TV donated by Harvey Norman.
The winning entrants were Emma Webby and 8-year-old son Zahn who volunteer with CanTeen; Lizzie Wake (SPCA volunteer); Vivienne Jones (Sea Cadets volunteer); Paula Johnston (Grace Foundation Charitable Trust volunteer) and Aleishia Norton (Pacific Hope medical ship volunteer).
