Violence against females has one billion moving

Raising awareness of violence against women and girls through music and dance is the idea behind the One Billion Rising movement.

And today, One Billion Rising will hold its third annual event in Wanganui.

Organiser Maria Lawless said the public was invited to show their movement by joining in the drum circle, music, dancing, poetry reading and other creative events at Majestic Square from 10am to 4pm.

One Billion Rising was an awareness-raising event that was gathering momentum.

"It's a global event that shines a light on the oppression of women and girls that is still happening."

This year's event will also be a fundraiser for the Wanganui Women's Network.

The day will close with two workshops held by the Harre sisters, Laila and Niki, called Re-thinking the System.

Everyone is welcome to discuss possibilities of living well in the current political system.

The workshops will be held at Majestic Square at 2.30pm, and at the Whanganui Regional Museum at 7pm.
