Verbal threats lead to prison

A Whanganui man who made verbal threats to a woman has been sent to prison.

Kushal Chand appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to two charges of contravening a protection order.

While shopping with the victim in Whanganui Chand became frustrated with the behaviour of a child who was with them and angry he couldn't find his eftpos card.

Chand called the victim a "f*****g b****" before driving her home. Chand continued verbally abusing her before the victim said she would call the police.

Chand responded: "After I bash your head into the ground you won't be able to phone."

On another date he turned up to the victim's home to retrieve property and said: "You're going to lose the kids if you keep going to f*****g CYFS about me."

Judge Dugald Matheson said domestic violence in "any shape or form" had come under attention in recent times. "It is something the New Zealand community is tarred with and you are part of the mix."

Chand was convicted and sentenced to six weeks' imprisonment on one charge and four weeks on the other, to be served cumulatively.
