Tunnel gets a paint job

Wanganui's iconic Durie Hill lift was off limits to the public yesterday while it underwent annual maintenance and the 200 metre tunnel leading to it was painted.

Two painting firms, Quality Decorating and G Jones, carried out the work. Electricians and engineers gave the elevator an overhaul while the painters worked in the tunnel.
Wanganui District Council Building Services officer Gordon Eastbrooke said the elevator would be open today "We're carrying out an inspection on the elevator next Tuesday and the painters were in there yesterday while it was closed to the public," he said.
