Truck crashes into railbridge, closes highway near Marton

A large truck has become wedged under a rail overbridge on State Highway 1 near Marton this morning.

Police say the vehicle is blocking the highway and heavy haulage equipment will be needed to clear it from the road.

The NZ Transport Agency has tweeted State Highway 1 is closed by the intersection of the highway and Calico Line near Marton due to a crash.

Calico Line is one of two main roads off the highway leading to the Rangitikei township.

Police said the accident happened around 4.15am.

No one was injured.

The bridge, which crosses over a dip in the road, would need assessing for structural defects, said a spokeswoman.

Contractors were now on the scene working out how to remove the truck from the underpass.

Traffic was being diverted around the crash.
