A ute and a tanker truck have collided at a busy Whanganui intersection this morning.

Police have spoken to drivers of both vehicles, with early indications one of the vehicles failed to give way.

A tanker was travelling down St John's Hill on State Highway 3 to get on to London St, while a ute was on Victoria Ave, turning to head up St John's Hill on State Highway 3.

Constable Stu Bourne said it's a timely reminder to give way.

"This is a reminder to not jump the gun, drivers need to be aware of their give way obligations."

Constable Bourne said the intersection often catches drivers out.

"It's a confusing intersection and always has been," he said.

No one was injured in the crash.
