Traffic management in place after vehicle crashes into intersection traffic lights in Whanganui

Traffic lights are out at the intersection of Guyton St and Wilson St following a crash on Tuesday afternoon.

A single-vehicle crash into a traffic light pole in Whanganui has temporarily disabled the signals.

The traffic lights at the intersection of Guyton St and Wilson St are out of action after a car crash about 3.15pm on Tuesday.

Hato Hone St John sent an ambulance and Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded with two vehicles from Whanganui.

One person with moderate injuries was taken to Whanganui Hospital and another was assessed at the scene.

Fire and Emergency shift manager Murray Dunbar said no extrication was required.

“It sounds like the traffic light pole took a bit of a beating,” he said.

Whanganui District Council has placed a temporary roundabout at the intersection.

Repairs are expected to take about three weeks, as special parts need to be ordered.

The council said a new pole and lantern assembly would be installed and the electrical damage to the controller cabinet needed to be fixed.

The council asked drivers to take care and follow directions when driving through the intersection or use an alternative route.
