MWCarpeLibrum BOOKED: The new tattoo.

MWCarpeLibrum BOOKED: The new tattoo.

I feel like this week has come and gone, and as I sit here writing this, I am pondering where did it go?
I am quietly excited that I can almost feel a touch of summer coming, that is when we are not being blasted by the intermittent rain and wind!
Daylight
saving is here and that means, in my busy world, a few more hours of daylight to get everything done, which hopefully in turn will give me more time to lose myself in some great books.
As usual The Gonville Café Library has been humming along, great books coming and going, the coffee aroma filling the air and lovely customers using our space and services.
The Inked @ the Library promotion is winding up and I thought it was only fair that The Inked Librarian, aka, me, share my latest addition and the story behind it.
Carpe Librum - "seize the book". A phrase I hold dear and have believed in for most of my life. Books have, throughout my life, managed to provide me an education, cheap entertainment, a career and at times a safe place to escape to. I have never underestimated the power of books and in my work I see on a daily basis what a book, let alone what a library can do for people and communities. So that's the story behind my latest tattoo.
I am reading my Gonville Book Club pick - China Dolls by Lisa See and the memoir - Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed. I am enjoying the contrast between them and the reviews will be in next week's column.
School holidays are upon us and if you have children in your life the issue of keeping them entertained while trying to keep the budget in check can be a difficult one to achieve. Fear not, the library and the Awa City Clubhouse have a fantastic holiday programme which not only has a wide range of activities for all age groups, but it's FREE!
My kids are especially excited about the Minecraft sessions as I am sure a lot of kids are, based on feedback at the library. The programme is available at any of our libraries or check out our website www.wanganuilibrary.com.
So... now a favour to ask you, the reader. I am in the process of compiling a list of the top 100 books. I need your suggestions. What book/ books did you love, would you highly recommend, would be a book you would gift to someone? It can be new, a classic or a biography. Email, Facebook or ring me with your suggestions. I would really appreciate it and as for the list when it is compiled, summer and reading make a sizzling combination ... Watch this space.
Upcoming events
Thursday, October 2, 10am. Gonville Book Club monthly meeting. If you are wanting to join a group of like-minded people who love books in a very social relaxed way, one of the library book clubs maybe just the thing for you. Contact me on my details below.
Monday, October 6, 12.30pm. Lyn Cheyne, promotions and marketing manager at the Wanganui District Council, is giving a workshop at the Gonville Café Library Community Room about "Press Releases for the Arts".
¦For more information on any of the activities mentioned above please feel free to call in at The Gonville Café Library, or phone 3445872 or email me kelly@wanganuilibrary.com.
