One of the board works has been fashioned into a wall clock and the painted wood has a ceramic look.
"I painted the pieces separately and glued them back together - it involved a lot of clamping and was quite time-consuming."
There is one landscape that stands out as an exotic location and Maxey said it is a scene of the Grand Canyon painted in 2008.
"I explored the Nankoweap caves above the canyon.
"They were once used as grain stores by the local Indians and they were fascinating."
Closer to home, there is a landscape of the Mangakowhai Stream on a rainy day and a scene of the Whanganui River seen from above Jerusalem.
"I know the Whanganui River is never blue but on that day it looked blue because it was reflecting the sky."
