Tech College Old Boys unable to hold on, let in late own goal to draw in final round of Manawatu Men's Premier hockey

Tech College Old Boys (TCOB) finished their Manawatu Men's Premier hockey campaign with a draw in Levin on Saturday.

TCOB gifted MCOB a goal with five minutes remaining when they put the ball into their own net and when time ran out the scoreboard read 1-all.

Senior player Calum Wilbur said it was a disappointing mistake.

"I don't think they had a shot on goal all game apart from their short corners, but they also probably didn't deserve to lose," Wilbur said.

"It was quite an even contest and played in really good spirits being the last game of the season."

Lee Moir got TCOB on the board early with a goal in the first half, before the own goal mishap, and then there was almost late drama.

MCOB were awarded a short corner with little time remaining, they took it and were then awarded a penalty stroke by an umpire.

However, it was over-ruled by his counterpart, who awarded MCOB another short corner, which they failed to capitalise on, leaving the game drawn.

The draw meant MCOB finished fifth on the table and TCOB were six points behind them in sixth after winning just two games.

Wilbur put the poor results down to a lack of consistency.

"Our players just weren't turning up, especially to training. We had our best training session the night before the final game, which just makes things too hard," he said.

"If you can't get players to training, you're not going to build that consistency and teamwork and link-up play that you need playing in that comp over in Palmy."

Wilbur said that the poor training efforts affected his performance this season and he wasn't happy with how he had played.

Despite this, he will be back for another crack at the competition next year.

"It will be quite a different team next year, a lot of the older guys have said they'd rather play in the competition over here on a Friday night rather than travel on Saturday.

"But the four or five Collegiate boys who have played all really stepped up, they will form a good core for the team next year, at least before they all head off to uni."
