At Whanganui East School we know how learning can make children a little tired at times. We believe that it can be really useful to have a quick break in between lessons. We make sure to have fruit break. In 2005 the Ministry of Health came up with an idea to try andpromote healthy eating in schools, by supplying 547 schools with free fruit. That's 102,000 students enjoying the benefits of fruit in their schools. They wanted to get the communities involved as well by creating more awareness towards physical activity and healthy eating. Now more and more schools are getting involved and children are starting to take ownership of what they think is healthy and what they think is not. In Room two at Whanganui East School students love to have a quick fruit break. The students finish their work, tidy up, go for a quick run to burn some energy, then they choose a piece of fruit and enjoy a quick break eating it. Tiachar: "I like running because I try to run faster every time." Rebecca: "Fruit break makes you healthy." Jessica: "I can get fit." Bridee: "It gives us energy." Paipa: "I like fruit break so I can have a break after my work." Taonga: "Sometimes we do Jump Jam for fitness. It's my favourite." We are proud to be encouraging others to try and maintain a healthy active lifestyle. Room two students are great advocates for fruit break and we really appreciate the free fruit that is given to us. We hope that this message encourages other families or students to choose the healthier option.
