A week of sunshine, clear skies and summery weather is forecast for Whanganui with some chance of cloud towards the weekend.

A high-pressure system is sitting over the North Island, bringing warmer temperatures and settled, dry conditions to most of the island through until Friday, MetService meteorologist Alanna Burrows said.

“It’s looking quite settled for this week.

“We’re expecting it to be lots of sunny spells and dry.”

From today, people can expect clear skies and “plenty of sunshine” in Whanganui.

This will continue into Wednesday during the day, with some cloud accumulating overnight on Wednesday before giving way to sunny conditions on Thursday.

There is a chance of overnight cloud cover on Thursday into Friday which will break up on Friday morning.

Heading into the weekend, there may be increased cloud cover on Saturday as the high-pressure system begins to give way to wet, windy weather, first over the South Island and then northward.

Sunday may have increased cloud cover with some chance of rain as the high pressure begins to push north.

“Potentially we could see a little bit of rain coming through on Sunday as it’s turning more unsettled from the south,” Burrows said.

“There’s still a bit of uncertainty at this stage.”

The daytime high temperatures are expected to be 23C today, 24C on Tuesday and Wednesday, 25C on Thursday to Saturday, then 27C on Sunday.

The overnight low temperatures are expected to be 13C today, 14C on Tuesday, 15C on Wednesday, 16C on Thursday and 17C on Friday to Sunday.

Winds are expected to be light and variable throughout the beginning of the week, with some afternoon sea breezes along coastal areas.

Westerly winds are expected to strengthen from late Thursday into Friday.

These westerly winds may strengthen into Saturday and Sunday as the weather becomes more unsettled, depending on the movement of the high-pressure system.

“It’s going to be quite a nice summery feel to this week.”
