In Wanganui football circles, one of the oldest team names would be City Strollers, a team that has been around since the 1980s, and has featured some well-known players. While it's a social team, Strollers has a proud history, having won the Wanganui local league more than once in past
years.
But Strollers has been missing from local league competition for the past couple of seasons, as team members have moved on and new teams have formed, leaving a depleted player base for what was once an iconic local league team. But that's about to change....
Wanganui City Football Club is looking to reform a Strollers team for the 2017 season, which starts in mid-April, and is looking for fresh (or recycled) players to boost numbers.
To be a Stroller you don't need to be a gun footballer. The team is open to players of any ability, including those new to the game or returning after some years away from the playing field. In the past there have been a number of fathers and sons turning out, so it's a good opportunity to get off the couch. Strollers, as the name suggests, is a low-key team.
Training has always been seen as 'optional', but the team plans to be competitive in the division two local league grade.
