The New Zealand String Quartet is known for its imaginative programming and for its powerful connection with audiences of all kinds.

The quartet will open the 2019 celebrity season in Whanganui next week with a programme of music by Haydn, Beethoven, Janacek and a short, bonbon to end the programme by talented young NZ composer, Natalie Hunt.

Hunt's Data Entry Groove is described by quartet members as witty and energetic and a great way to round off the evening's programme with a sense of fun.

With the support of funding from Whanganui District Council, local students of violin, viola and cello will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop in Collegiate's Concert Room on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 13 from 2.30 to 4 pm.

There will a $5 entry charge, for school-age students who wish to participate or watch and the charge will also cover entry to quartet's evening recital.

Chamber Music Wanganui's Ingrid Culliford said the society is immensely grateful to the individuals and businesses whose sponsorship has enabled the 2019 series to go ahead.

"We would particularly like to acknowledge Mr and Mrs Chris and Lesley Carter for their support of this first concert."

Culliford said there will the opportunity to purchase season tickets and subscriptions before the concert on Wednesday evening.
