State Highway 3 north of Whanganui has reopened after a rolled truck resulted in the blockage of both lanes.

The incident occurred shortly after 7am on Monday, near the intersection with Pakaraka Rd between Maxwell and Waitōtara.

A truck and trailer tipped onto its side, with a large amount of grain spilled across the road.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency warned motorists on Monday morning that delays were expected as contractors worked to remove the heavy vehicle.

The road reopened under stop/go traffic management for a short time around 9:30am, but closed to all traffic again shortly after.

The road reopened fully around 1:15pm on Monday.
