The Desert Rd is closed following a truck crash that has left two people injured.

The truck has gone down a bank and a heavy vehicle salvage is under way, a Fire and Emergency NZ (Fenz) spokesman said.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said State Highway 1 was closed between Waiouru and Rangipo and detours were in place.

A police spokesman said the single-vehicle crash was reported about 7am.

“One person is reported to have serious injuries and another is reported to have minor injuries.

“Motorists are advised to take care around the area and expect delays.”

Fenz said six crews attended the crash. The truck was reportedly on fire, but was out by the time crews arrived.

“A driver and a passenger were able to exit the truck without rescue equipment and were being assessed by paramedics.”

Crews were monitoring for any spillage as the truck was carrying hazardous goods, the spokesman said.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two ambulances and a helicopter went to the scene and two people, one in a moderate condition and one in a minor condition, were airlifted to Taupō Hospital.
