State Highway 1 was closed in both directions south of Waiouru this afternoon as a result of a vehicle fire, police said.

Police received reports of a vehicle on fire at about 4pm, at the junction of Deacons Rd and State Highway 1.

NZTA tweeted the road was closed "due to a bus fire" between Taihape and Waiouru, near the Deacons Rd intersection. The lane has since opened, NZTA tweeted.

Police and fire officers were at the scene.

There are no reports of injuries.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible as there are no diversions in place.

The cause of the fire is not known.
