The earthquake was 10km below Whanganui and occurred just before 3.30am. Photo / GeoNet

A 3.4 magnitude earthquake rocked the Whanganui region in the early hours of this morning.

The earthquake occurred just before 3.30am on Wednesday, 25km south-west of Whanganui at a depth of 10km.

According to GeoNet, there were 79 total reports, with 76 of those categorising it as light or weak.
