Firefighters have extinguished the fire that started in the roof space of a commercial building on High St in Hāwera.

Fire and Emergency NZ crews from seven stations responded to the fire after a member of the public noticed smoke coming from the top of the building around 7am.

Fire and Emergency NZ central shift manager Alison Munn said the fire and hotspots were extinguished at 11am.

The building has been handed back to the building owners.

The seven responding crews were Hāwera, Okaiawa, Eltham, Manaia, Stratford, New Plymouth and Whanganui.
