Security camera donated to bashed dairy owner

Former Whanganui man Andrew Slight wants people to feel safe at his ex-local dairy so he's donating a security camera to protect them.

After reading about the violent robbery on September 9 of the Rangitikei St dairy owner and a woman who came to his aid, Mr Slight wanted to help.

Now based in Auckland, Mr Slight grew up in Whanganui East and lived in Whanganui until about five years ago.

"We bought a house not far from the Rangitikei St shop and my daughters used to go to the dairy to buy lollies," Mr Slight said.

"We still have our house in Whanganui and my brother and his family live there. I want people to be safe going to their local shop and for the owners to feel safe. "

Mr Slight is donating a full HD DVR security camera kit and the installation will be done by his brother, who is an electrician, in consultation with dairy owner Mr Zhou.

A Givealittle campaign to raise money for security cameras for the dairy has so far received $150 in donations.

Mr Zhou and the woman suffered head injuries after being bashed with a hammer when four offenders robbed the dairy, demanding cash and cigarettes but getting away with only confectionery. Both victims required head stitches, with the woman needing about 30.
