This time last year Wanganui High School student Brad Fisher was a poster boy for keeping religious teaching secular and factual.
As a boy at Durie Hill School he remembers being scared by talk of sin and going to hell, and said the teacher encouraged belief by giving out treats.
"If someone demonstrated a belief that the tutor aligned with, they would reinforce that by giving out lollies."
He designed posters for the campaign to ban overtly Christian teaching in state schools, and he made some enemies that way.
He received death threats from other teenagers, and people yelled at him in the street. The Chronicle's web page was filled with vehement comments for a while after his story ran.
