Several primary school sport volunteers have recently been recognised and rewarded in a special promotion supported by the Lotto Volunteer Foundation Thank A Sportmaker campaign. Primary schools were offered the opportunity to give their sport volunteers a Lotto Volunteer hooded sweatshirt each, as thanks for their volunteer work. The cosy and practical"hoodies" are all courtesy of the Lotto Volunteer Foundation, Sport New Zealand and Sport Whanganui. Volunteers play an extremely important role in sport, and school administrators know that without volunteer assistance from their community, many children would miss out on valuable sporting opportunities. Gonville School rewarded four of their special sport volunteers. Teacher in Charge of Sport Leigh Cornish welcomed the opportunity to praise the volunteer's regular support of the school: "Our Gonville learners are fortunate to have great volunteers who believe in the value of participation in sports. Out of school sport happens because of these people." Andrew Spence, principal of Churton School was pleased to gift sweatshirts to a number of volunteers, "We are very fortunate to have such a large number of sports volunteers at Churton School. We have close to 100 per cent of our students involved in organised sports. To ensure that all of our students are given the opportunity to participate, we need the support of our sports volunteers. The school's volunteers attend, organise practices and share their knowledge and love of the game." Andrew's words reflect that sport and physical activity goes beyond physical well-being. "Churton School values sport as it teaches our students the importance of team work, co-operation, fair play, competition and perseverance. At Churton School we are fortunate to have so many people support our sports programmes." Being a sport volunteer is rewarding and fulfilling, and reportedly 95 per cent of sport volunteers recommend doing it. Sport Whanganui congratulates those school sport volunteers that have received a sweatshirt, and thanks participating schools for supporting the campaign.
