The West Coast Bombers congratulate each other during Saturday's "Wheels of the West" event at Jubilee Stadium.

There was some very pleasing results for the West Coast Bombers roller derby league at their "Wheels of the West" event at Jubilee Stadium on Saturday.

Three matchups were played by the club members, in a co-ed matchup, a women's game for the development squad, and then for the first time an all-men's squad from just one club took to the hard wood to play a national side.

The Bombers mixed gender team started the day out right with a comfortable 168-106 win over Mash Up, from the Palmerston North Swamp City Roller Derby league.

It was a tougher lesson for the Stealth Bombers, the development squad for the Bombers, who were hammered 205-73 by Hawke's Bay's Twisted Sister team.

The matchup started out fairly even, but then Twisted Sister upped the tempo and intensity to get away from the Stealth Bombers.

Then the Bombers' men's team went out to make history, and it was in more ways than one, as they upset the New Zealand Men's Development squad with a 171-146 victory, which had the other club members and their watching supporters rocking.

The local squad was made up of their handful of players who represented New Zealand at the Men's Roller Derby World Cup, plus some up-and-coming graduates from the recent intake.

It was suitably physical on the hard wood at Jubilee across the three matchups.
