They're a new band but they're full of confidence ahead of tonight's Smokefreerockquest.

Contraband is one of 17 acts taking part in the Wanganui regional final of Smokefreerockquest.

The band consists of Te Paerata Tichbon (vocals and guitar), Aaman Merchant (guitar), Ryan Peralta (keyboards), Finn Brown (bass) and Mitchell Brett-Atkins (drums). All are students from Wanganui High School.

The five-piece alternative rockers have only been together for two months but as Mitchell described it, "we have good chemistry".

Despite their recent arrival on the scene, the performers are aiming for the top.

"We're excited about it and we're aiming to win," Te Paerata said.

They will play two original songs for the show. The music was written by the band as a whole, while Finn and Te Paerata provided the lyrics. And even if they don't taste success at the Smokefreerockquest, the boys said they would continue to make music together.

Twelve of the 17 acts in this year's Smokefreerockquest are from Wanganui High School. The others are Welcome to Thailand, Backstage Hazards, MK Deep, B-O-D, Long Way Down, pedal point, Just Grace, Kim and Zoe, Too Cliche, Rendezvous, and Optic Illusion.

Smokefreerockquest will be held today, 7pm, at the Royal Wanganui Opera House. Tickets at the door, students $10, adults $15.
