History will be made on the Whanganui River on Sunday when two riverboats set sail for Hipango Park.
The trip will be the first time in at least 70 years the PS Waimarie and the MV Wairua will travel to Hipango Park.
Whanganui Riverboat Centre manager David McDermid said the MV Wairua
went out of service around 1940.
"So it must be at least 70 years since they have both been on the river at the same time at Hipango Park.
"The MV Wairua is the only boat still operating on the river that was built specifically for Alexander Hatrick," Mr McDermid said.
"The PS Waimarie was built for the Wanganui River Settlers Company that were competitors to Hatrick's operations. He later took the company over.
"Sunday will certainly be the first time both vessels have travelled to Hipango Park since being restored."
Mr McDermid said a party had chartered the PS Waimarie and while he had a small party aboard the MV Wairua there were still limited seats available for paying customers.
Both vessels will leave for Hipango Park at 9am.
