Whanganui's Wharf St slipway in Castlecliff was covered with fish on Sunday - but only some were winners.

The annual Easter boat fishing contest, attracting entrants from across the North Island, reached record numbers with nearly 300 anglers and 90 boats entered.

After six hours of "lines out" competitors returned to the slipway for weigh-in and these were the results:

Snapper Section
1st – 9.456kg snapper - Brian Howes
2nd – 8.640kg snapper - Gareth Watson
3rd – 8.546kg snapper - Paul Giddy

Blue Cod Section
1st – 2.162kg blue cod - Dave Higgins
2nd – 2.036kg blue cod - James Glass
3rd – 1.940kg blue cod - Jane Laugesen

Gurnard Section
1st – 966gm gurnard - Maurice Wigglesworth
2nd – 900gm gurnard - Pauline Graham
