Black Ferns debuts are on the cards for Rangitīkei’s Hollyrae Mete-Renata and Taufa Bason after being named in the 30-strong squad for the Pacific Four Series.

The pair have been selected in head coach Whitney Hansen’s first Black Ferns squad for 2026, which is set to face the United States, Canada and Australia in the Pacific Four Series (PAC4).

They join six other potential debutantes, with Bason, 19, one of three teenagers named for the first time.

Hollyrae Mete-Renata

Mete-Renata, 22, plays for the Manawatū Cyclones and the Blues as a midfielder and can play wing.

She said a lot of hard work over the off-season had paid off with her Black Ferns selection.

“I’m really happy ... I’m really excited about the opportunity to go over there.”

Originally from Rātana, she was schooled in Whanganui, attending Whanganui High School before moving to Manukura School in Year 13.

She recalled catching the bus to Whanganui every day for school and representing the district’s age-grade rugby teams.

She said her first rugby coach at Whanganui High School, Jordan Maraku, gave her the confidence to pursue rugby.

“He thought that I could go further with my rugby, he was one of the ones that said ... it would be best to go to Manukura.”

Mete-Renata said her father and former Cyclones teammate Sosoli Talawadua were influential in her pursuit, too.

She made her debut for the Cyclones in 2021 and was awarded the Fiao’o Fa’amausili Medal as Farah Palmer Cup (FPC) Player of the Year in 2024.

That season, she topped the stats for metres gained, defenders beaten and offloads.

After a stint with the Hurricanes Poua in 2024, she ventured south to play for Matatū the following year, which she said was a big move.

“There was a lot of thinking into it. After speaking with Whitney [Hansen] and my dad, it was best for me to go down there and get out of my comfort zone of being at home to experience new things.

“Having the opportunity to go down there was really helpful for me, and I loved it.”

She said it was beneficial for her to learn from experienced players in her position, such as Amy du Plessis and Grace Brooker.

She was rewarded with a call-up to the Black Ferns XV side last year, which she said was a “great experience”.

“Having a whole bunch of girls that were new to international rugby made me confident going into it.

“It was really cool to get that experience first before coming into the Black Ferns environment.”

This year, she has signed for the Blues. She hopes she can perform well and stay injury-free after suffering an Achilles heel injury last year.

“Being up there, I’ve really enjoyed it; it’s definitely an environment where I feel more at ease, so the Blues will be exciting for me.”

Taufa Bason

Bason plays loose forward for FPC team Auckland Storm and the Blues. She said it was a “blessing” to be selected in the Black Ferns squad.

Bason was born in Tonga and moved to New Zealand with her family in 2007.

“My parents wanted to move to a different country for better opportunities,” she said.

“My dad was a Tongan rugby player, but he had injuries, so he decided to have kids to see if we could finish the job for him.”

Two of Bason’s brothers, Vernon and Mosese, are in the Hurricanes set-up and play for the Manawatū Turbos.

When Taufa was about 9, her family moved to a farm near Marton, where she attended South Mākirikiri School.

She remembered her father sending her and her brothers off to feed the pigs after playing to “cool down”.

“Dad got us out on the paddock doing running drills, too.

“My siblings used to do a two-on-two or three-on-three footy game going full hundies on each other.”

Bason boarded at Feilding High School, where she made the first XV in Year 9.

She made her Cyclones debut in Year 12 and often had to carpool with Mete-Renata and Talawadua back to Feilding.

In 2025, she was a part of the Matatū wider squad but later signed for the Blues, earning five caps and scoring three tries for the season.

Bason said it was a “massive move” to go to Auckland.

“I’m a family girl; even when I boarded, I always wanted to go home to see my family.”

Later that year, she won the Fiao’o Fa’amausili Medal while playing for Auckland and joined Mete-Renata in the Black Ferns XV squad.

“Hollyrae and I have come a long way for a girl from Rātana and with me coming from Marton.

“We’ve realised that every path that we have crossed, we have stuck together; from the carpool to where we are now. It’s crazy.”

The Black Ferns’ first PAC4 game is against the US in California on April 11.
