Poppy day gives a $20,000 boost for veterans

Wanganui Chronicle advertising representative Kaydee Bailey presented Wanganui Returned Services Association with a cheque from funds raised during the poppy day promotion in the leadup to Anzac Day.

The proceeds make up part of the $20,000 raised by the poppy appeal in Whanganui this year and RSA president Ted Morris said it has been a great effort.

"I wish to sincerely thank all the organisations and individual volunteers who assisted with the poppy collection this year and especially the public who gave so generously.

"Your support for this appeal is greatly appreciated as all proceeds go to the poppy fund for the benefit of all former and current servicemen and women, their spouses or partners, widows, widowers and dependants."

Mr Morris said he was also very impressed with the attendance at the Anzac Day services throughout the district.

"The dawn service was once again well attended by Whanganui residents who gathered to commemorate those who have served our country for over a century and those who are still serving.

"It is always pleasing to see the large number of young people in attendance at these services."

RSA regional welfare officer Robbie Robertson said the poppy fund helps to maintain 26 mobility scooters, two electric and six manual wheelchairs used by veterans.

"We couldn't do any of our work without the generosity of the Whanganui public and we really appreciate the support," said Mr Robertson.

He said younger veterans often need a different kind of support for stress-related conditions which are often poorly understood.
