And there's plenty of flak to be swallowed as ratepayers complain about their rising bills.
There's also a lot of work involved and diligent councillors who commit to the job quickly realise that the hourly rate of pay is minimum wage stuff.
There are those who make a career out of local government, picking up the stipend and, after the first flush of enthusiasm has gone, happily treading water at the ratepayers' expense.
But most of them climb on board because they want to make a difference - and because they believe they can make a difference. It's a mixture of community spirit and ego.
One thing is certain - this year's election to our district council is important for the wellbeing of the city and district. We need some new faces, we need some new ideas and we need a cohesive team who won't succumb to in-fighting.
