As the year draws to a close no doubt many of us are looking forward to some time to kick back and enjoy some rest and relaxation with family and friends.
The Christmas spirit is definitely gathering momentum and our festive Victoria Avenue adds colour and vibrancy to the season.
If you
have had a chance to visit the avenue in the late evening you will surely have marvelled at the strings of Christmas lights adorning our CBD. If there is a downside to this time of year I'm sure many would agree with me that the persistent wind we have been experiencing is beginning to grate, particularly for those that work outside a lot.
Now that we are officially in summer let's hope we start to see some calmer days with temperatures starting to move upward.
Despite the wind, the rose beds are blooming and annual flower beds are receiving much praise. The pastel shades being used this year are a calmer change from the bold primary colours usually used.
Santa has been very busy opening the dozens of letters he has received from local children with their Christmas wishlists. It has been lovely to see so many youngsters putting pen to paper to let Santa know how their year has been and whether they have been "naughty or nice".
A reminder to mark the date of the annual Wanganui Vintage weekend in your new 2016 calender. This event-filled Wellington Anniversary long weekend is a "must do" in our town and there is something for everyone to enjoy from jazz cruises on the Waimarie, flea markets and farmers markets, boundless banquet, vintage rally, big screen outdoor movies and lots more.
More information will be available in the new year on www.vintageweekend.co.nz, but also look out for the colourful programmes available throughout Whanganui and also from our office.
Mainstreet will host several other festivals throughout 2016 that will entice a range of people to get involved. Also a reminder that next year is the 25th anniversary of Mainstreet ... exciting times ahead.
So enjoy a happy and safe festive season with whomever you are spending it with. Enjoy each other's company, be kind and appreciate all that you have. Also spare a thought for those who work through Christmas and can not always be with their families.
Happy Christmas from the whole team at Mainstreet Wanganui.
¦If you have any questions, suggestions or comments , please direct them to the Mainstreet office 348 0157, email us; office@mainstreetwanganui or drop in and see us at 36 Ridgway St.
