A substantial environmental grant from Nestle Purina in Marton to the Marton Junction School has the pupils excitedly planning a range of projects.

Six planter box gardens are well under way to grow vegetables.

And as well as a planter box garden for each class and two for the community, there will also be a garden shed, a chicken coop, some compost bins and a worm farm.

Principal Vanessa Te Ua said the gardens had been strategically placed to the side of the hall at the back entrance to the kitchen.

"That will make the concept 'From Garden to Plate' a lot easier for the students."

Mrs Te Ua said the school children all sent a big thank-you message to the team at McIlwaines Mitre 10 who built the gardens and Nestle Purina for its support.

"We are so thrilled. It's wonderful for our school."
