The first badge placed on the 'Pinetree Log' reads 'Wanganui 2017' as Steelform Wanganui's crushing 80-3 win over King Country on Saturday sees them as the inaugural holders of the Sir Colin Meads Memorial Trophy.
The prize to honour the All Blacks legend, who played in multiple Wanganui-King Country combinedteams, will be contested in games of significance between the unions.
The trophy was the idea of Wanganui rugby historian JB Phillips, who approached Sir Colin's close friends John and Ruth Palamountain to commission it.
Permission was given by the Meads family, with son Glynn Meads representing them when the trophy, made of pine tree, was unveiled at Cooks Gardens on Saturday.
Blair Symes of Display Associates was able to construct the trophy on short notice to be ready for Saturday's game.
Glynn Meads lifted the veil on the trophy in the presence of Wanganui and King Country rugby officials, along with New Zealand Rugby Union president Maurice Trapp.
Both King Country and Wanganui pose with the 'Pinetree Log' after the first game to play for it at Cooks Gardens.
