HISTORIC: St Peter's Church in Koromiko Rd. PICTURE / PAUL BROOKS
This year Whanganui's oldest public building, St Peter's Church in Gonville, celebrates 150 years serving the community - first as the second Christ Church in Victoria Ave, then as its present designation on the hill overlooking its sprawling suburban parish.
But it's a celebration with a heavy touch of sadness, because,
like other outlying Anglican churches, St Peter's has held its last regular Sunday service.
The church was built in 1866 in Victoria Ave and served as Whanganui's central Anglican church, Christ Church, until building started on a replacement church in 1921 (the present Christ Church).
The old church was partially dismantled and re-erected on its present site, to serve the newly formed Gonville Parochial District as St Peter's. It has been 95 years on the hill-top site in Koromiko Rd.
Although the actual anniversary is July 17, the occasion will be marked on Sunday, August 28, says Kathleen Keith, celebration convenor. The day begins with a celebration church service at 10am followed by dedication of a commemorative tree, with light refreshments in the hall. There will be cutting of the cake and a chance to renew old friendships.
Kathleen and the committee would like to hear from everyone who would like to attend.
