Nominations have opened for 2018 entries in the Whanganui Sports Hall of Fame.

Announced at the Whanganui Sports Awards on November 16, the Hall inductee are recognised for sport achievements of athletes, coaches and officials who have made a significant impact on Whanganui's sporting heritage.

It is a joint initiative between Whanganui District Council and Sport Whanganui.

Criteria is that the nominees must be from the Whanganui district, by birth or adoption, have been retired for at least five years from top competition, have represented New Zealand at senior level, and/or have contributed positively to the district by bringing credit to local sport.

Among the 28 personalities currently inducted are Gary Anderson, winner of New Zealand's first ever Olympic Games medal for cycling with bronze at Barcelona 1992, and athlete Bev Shingles, who was the first woman to win three different New Zealand distance running titles.
