Cancellation of racing at Christmas at the Races at Wanganui Racecourse on Saturday was not enough to put off entrants in Fashion in the Field competition.

Heavy rain around the start of the racing saw the meet called off after just one race.

But entrants in Fashion in the Field still put their best feet forward.

Rebecca Sherie cleaned up in the women's section. She won best hat, and her elegant green and white ensemble saw her win best dressed female.

Rebecca has previously entered raceday fashion contests in Hawkes Bay where she won best headwear and New Plymouth where she was best dressed in the under 35 age group.

She said Fashion in the Field events are a good excuse to get dressed up and hair and make up done.

But she has no idea who made her dress.

"I can't say and there is no label. I got it in Australia from a millinery and racewear facebook site. My hat was by Hats by Zarbella."

She chose the outfit because it was green, the colour of spring, and seemed fitting. And it was very comfortable.
She won "lots of nice vouchers, hampers and flowers".

"There will be a shopping trip to Whanganui very soon.

"It was a tough competition. Anyone could have won. It's always fun to meet all the girls and wonderful people.

By day Rebecca is a police constable. She said people often do a double take when they discover she is usually a girl in blue but back at the station they aren't fazed.

"Most people react with surprise when they learn what I do, But, no I won't get any ribbing at work. They know I enter these events."

Chris Ward was best dressed male. He was also part of the Loaders group that won best dressed group award.

Lara Loader from Loaders said the group were regulars at the races.

"We like to book a room and have our Christmas function at the races."

Ms Loader said the group entered the competition last year and won it then, too.

"We're happy to have won it twice in a row," she said.

And although they were disappointed the racing was cancelled, Lara said they still had "a really good day".
