Contest winner
Congratulations to our Warratahs contest winner Lois Norton who will collect a free double pass to the show at Lucky Bar on September 28 and a copy of the band's new release, Drivin' Wheel. Thanks to all those who entered the contest.

Protesters celebrate
A year ago people opposed to
seabed mining protested at Whanganui's Castlecliff Beach (inset). On September 28 they meet there again, to celebrate the High Court decision quashing consents to mine iron-sand offshore from Patea. From 11am to 1pm there will be speeches and a sausage sizzle. The mining company, Trans-Tasman Resources, has until September 25 to appeal the High Court decision. The celebration will go ahead regardless of its decision, organiser Nicola Patrick said.

Pop-up shop back
The Charity Chest pop-up shop will be open for business for three weeks from Saturday, September 22. The shop, a fundraiser for Women's Refuge Whanganui and run by volunteers, sells new and pre-loved clothing, footwear and accessories. It will be open Monday to Saturday at 52 Victoria Ave, near the Watt Fountain. The last Charity Chest pop-up shop raised more than $20,000 for Women's Refuge.

Correction
The insurance company involved with the Earthquake Commission (EQC) in a case involving Whanganui couple Mark and Nichola Goodier is IAG. The wrong company was named in a Whanganui Chronicle headline on Monday.

Grants announced
New Zealand Community Trust has announced its grants for August.
Recipients in the Whanganui area are Alzheimers Whanganui ($6000 for diversional therapists, manager and office manager salaries), Hockey Wanganui ($130,000 for turf replacement), Rangitikei Golf Club ($3500 for chemicals, herbicides, insecticides and fungicides for golf course maintenance), Wanganui Community Education Service ($5000 for administrator salary), Wanganui Motorcycle Club ($55,000 for administrator contract and safety airfence), Wanganui Multiple Sclerosis Society ($5000 for office administrator salary) and Youth Services Trust Whanganui ($5000 for social worker salary).
