New Plymouth band DarkWater are said to pack a mighty big punch for a three-piece and they will bring their original rock sound to Whanganui on June 16.

Nathan Waipouri (guitar and vocals), Merran Dixon (bass and vocals) and Ross Kilgour (drums) describe their sound as "unique, gritty and gripping with a heaviness that enfolds melody".

They first formed as a four-piece in 2009 and have supported big name bands such as Shihad, Devilskin and I Am Giant along the way.

DarkWater became a three-piece in early 2013 and their sound has developed to encompass the changed lineup.

Bass player Dixon says the band are looking forward to playing for a Whanganui audience and will introduce their "stonking new single" Presence of Fear released last month.

"In true DarkWater style, the song is huge and gutsy with a driving low end that promises to hit you hard in all the right places."

Dixon says the band's sound continues to evolve and in 2016, they released the album You're only as addicted as you're willing to be followed by the video and single Eye of a Needle last year.

NZ Musician Magazine have described the DarkWater sound as "dynamic alt-rock with strong songwriting, hooks and warm melodies".

DarkWater will be supported by Whanganui three-piece band Mr. Sudden Death covering everything from rock to metal to sludge.
