Fitzherbert Ave traffic now has priority at the intersection with Totara St.

Fitzherbert Ave traffic now has priority at the intersection with Totara St.

The notorious Fitzherbert Ave-Totara St intersection has a new layout aimed at slowing traffic and preventing accidents.

The new T-intersection gives priority to Fitzherbert Ave traffic, with stop and give way signs controlling traffic in and out of Totara St.

Sandra Watson, who lives on Fitzherbert Ave, has had her fence hit by vehicles 11 times in the 14 years she has lived there, with five of the incidents occurring in a 13-month period.

Watson and her neighbour Teresa Payton organised a petition, signed by 1400 people, asking Whanganui District Council to install a roundabout at the intersection.

The council decided against a roundabout in favour of a traffic island and T-intersection to help slow traffic around the bend.
