There's no denying that the 2017 Artists Open Studios event has undergone many positive changes.
But what is yet to be touched on in depth is the exciting growth in studios which has risen from 64 in 2016 to 77, with about 26 studios new to the event.
This will be an exciting year for new and returning visitors. Not only are changes in how the event is run making it a breeze to plan your experience, there are new artists and spaces to explore as well as the strong calibre of favourite participating studios which have become a strong foundation for this arts event.
Event Co-ordinator Sarah Williams talks with one of the new faces to Artists Open Studios:
Sandra Grieve's The Felted Room has been making itself known since early last year, also featuring as one of our 12 finalists for the Cover Competition. Sandra's textile art is unique, using high quality eco-friendly sustainable materials that capture the essence and personality of many animal breeds, insects, flora and fauna. She often participates in Night Markets and the River Traders Market, building a strong online presence as well.
It's not surprising that when visiting Sandra's studio you'll be greeted with restored furniture filled with threads, buttons, wool and fabrics, a real treasure trove for those who enjoy vintage and modern textiles.
"I'm most creative when surrounded by my materials; particular materials will spur visions of a finished product. I'm always sketching in my mind new ideas waiting to be brought to life." She'll be presenting intricate and highly finished works for the event from her home-based studio which overlooks beautiful gardens. She admits the view is a happy distraction while she works and couldn't think of anywhere else to base herself.
"I have always enjoyed the lifestyle Whanganui offers."
Sandra will be joined by fellow artist Bronwen Coe during the event, who also recently launched her business, Seashore Studio. Artists are often strengthened when good collaboration forms. It's supportive to have another artist to work alongside and to enjoy each other's company. Sandra and Bronwen forged this collaboration when sharing stall space at a market. Bronwen's creative process is also inspired by materiality.
"I've always enjoyed the sound of the ocean...but mostly I am inspired by the wonderful shapes of materials found at the beach washed up by the waves." Namely, driftwood.
"I often wonder about the journey they have been on and what stories they would tell." The materials are never cut or altered but accentuated by the way she colours and presents it.
Both Sandra and Bronwen agree it is exciting to be newcomers to the event and they are a drawcard to Aramoho during the two weekends of Artists Open Studios.
