Patti Smith Group - Because the Night

Patti Smith Group - Because the Night

Now 70, Patti was originally a poet and singer/songwriter in the punk genre who released 11 albums. As a poet/author she has now 21 books to her credit.

Today's song Because The Night came to Patti as an incomplete song by Bruce Springsteen who was working on it during his Darkness On The Edge Of Town period, however he was convinced to give it to Patti, and she finished off the song one night while waiting for her husband Fred 'Sonic' Smith of the band MC5 to phone her, and the song tells of her love for him.

As you will hear, the song is a classic rock song, as opposed to her usual punk style, and it was her best selling effort, reaching #13 on the US Billboard chart and # 3 in the UK. It was released on her '78 album Easter (her 3rd album) which scores an 8.75 on the Mark-o-Meter.

Although Springsteen has said of the song, that if he had kept it, it would have never been released, he did record his version on his 2010 album The Promise.
