Mr Whippy to change tune

The Mr Whippy van man who sells ice creams in Wanganui treasures the Greensleeves tune and has mixed feelings about a possible change to the Mr Whippy theme song.

A change to the franchise ownership has led to speculation the tune that brings people out on to the streets to buy treats may be updated.

"We're 48 years old, and as part of our 50th anniversary we'll probably run a competition where people can try and add a back-beat to Greensleeves," said Mr Whippy franchise owner Chris Dorn.

Wanganui/Manawatu Mr Whippy franchise owner Bill Bundle has mixed feelings about any change.

"It has been around almost 50 years and was the only soft serve ice cream available for about 24 of those," said Mr Bundle.

He said Mr Whippy has become a part of Kiwi culture, almost a part of the constitution of New Zealand.

But there could be a positive side to any modernisation.

"Mr Whippy competitors have a similar song, so it would separate us a bit," said Mr Bundle.

Mr Bundle has been Mr Whippy for the Wanganui region for five years and says he loves the Greensleeves jingle.

"Becoming Mr Whippy was the best move I've ever made. I wish I'd done it sooner," said Mr Bundle.

Mr Whippy normally travels to Wanganui several days a week but because of a broken ice cream machine Mr Bundle won't be back for several weeks as he waits for a part to be sent to him.
