Mike Tafilipepe sinks another Hole in One at Wanganui Golf Course

As a child he was literally raised on the greens of the Royal Samoa Golf Course, and Wanganui Golf Club's veteran Mike Tafilipepe can still find the straightest path to the pin.

The 52-year-old made his second 'Hole in One' at the Belmont Links course of Saturday – taking out the 3 Iron on the seventh hole, a Par 3, during the club's monthly Net Medal competition in Division 1.

The monthly competition is unique as golfers tee off from the 'blue' tees, which are further back than the club's regular white tees.

"It's like a professional's tee," said Tafilipepe.

"We prefer to play off the blue.

"[The seventh], it's slightly up a hill, we could, all of us, see it.

"It just landed in the right spot and it released towards the hole. Popped in.

"It was awesome."

Tafilipepe's previous ace at Belmont was in 2011 on the second hole, also off the blue tee.

Born in Samoa in 1966, Tafilipepe took up the sport at just 8-years-old as his father was the greenkeeper at the Royal Samoa, while his mother worked in the pro shop.

"All I did in my younger life was golf," he said.

"School wasn't an option, golf was."

Tafilipepe's first handicap was a 10, and he has worked it down over the years to currently being a 6.1.

He has represented the Wanganui club at all levels including the A Grade Men's Pennants, and represented Samoa at the All-Samoa tournament in Sydney last year.

It is believed to be the fifth ace in the wide Whanganui area this year.
