A motorist is in a serious condition in Whanganui Hospital after a spectacular crash on the corner of Glasgow St and Gloucester St.

The two-car crash, which happened just after 12.30pm on Tuesday, saw one car drive over a post-box and narrowly miss smashing through the door of the Glasgow St dairy. The car had substantial damage to its front half.

Trudy Taylor from St John ambulance said the driver of the car, a man in his 60s, suffered a medical event at the wheel.

"He is in a serious condition in Whanganui Hospital. The driver of the other vehicle has minor injuries."

The second vehicle, a ute, was on the other side of Glasgow St with damage to its rear bumper.

A woman who lived in the area said she heard a loud bang and went outside to see the car drive up onto the footpath.

Police confirmed they were investigating the accident.
