Work has started on putting in a raised pedestrian crossing in Whanganui East.
The "platform" is intended to give pedestrians greater assurance when they cross Moana St in the busy suburban shopping centre.
Whanganui District Council received complaints about the safety of the crossing from locals last year and asafety review revealed either the distance of sight had to be increased or traffic slowed.
Council officers determined lowering the speed of cars by raising the crossing was the best way to do it.
The job will cost about $15,000 and about two thirds of that is funded by NZ Transport Agency.
