Macca's security guards will hand out promotional MacCoins in Whanganui on Wednesday.

Security guards will be handing out "currency" on the streets of Whanganui this week.

In a promotion for McDonald's restaurants, the Macca's security guards are bringing the limited-edition global currency, the MacCoin, to Whanganui to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac hamburger.

Tomorrow they will hand out MacCoins outside the main entrance to the UCOL central campus at 11.30am-noon and in Victoria Ave and surrounding streets between 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

The MacCoin is available in five designs, each representing a decade of the Big Mac. Each design pulls in elements from that time in history, nodding to art, music and pop culture.

The McDonald's promotional brass coin has no cash value and can be redeemed for one free Big Mac at participating restaurants during 2018.
