It was a race against the clock - and the competition - at the recent Mathex mathematics festival.

On August 29, 120 teams of four pupils each took part in the annual Mathex competition in the Wanganui Intermediate School hall. Children from Year 5 to 8 participated against other schools in four separate contests.

This year students came from as far afield as Taihape, Bulls and Waverley. Each team had up to 30 minutes to answer 20 maths questions, one at a time.

The first thee sections used the entire 20 minutes and it was only in the Year 8 competition that the clock was stopped because the winning team (Whanganui Intermediate 1) had answered all 20 questions in 27 minutes 18 seconds.

Results:
Year 5
1st - Fordell (Anya Sewell, Hamish Cranstone, Blake Sollitt, Thomas Dwyer)
2nd equal - Mosston (Maggie Ye, Sarah Couper, Brack Turner, Toby Matthews) Durie Hill (Bonnie Herrick, Rebekah Doney, Reica Whale, Mika Groves) and Hunterville (Josh Keenan, Zeta-Rose Nydegger-Monks, Ben Sanson, Mackenzie Carman)
