Two fire appliances were needed to extinguish a shed fire in Matai St in Whanganui on Tuesday night.

Fire and Emergency were alerted to the blaze at around 9pm and Whanganui senior station officer Craig Gardiner said the shed was well involved when crews arrived.

"Our team got there in reasonable time and dealt to it" Gardiner said.

Gardiner said the shed is extensively damaged structurally and will probably have to be pulled down.

No one was at the home at the time of the fire.
