Police are investigating a shooting in Whanganui last night.

A 29-year-old man was shot in the leg and taken to Whanganui Hospital.

Central District police spokesman, acting senior sergeant Chris Day, said the man was with another on River Rd when he was shot with a rifle about 8.50pm.

He could not say why the men were out with a rifle.

At this stage the incident looks accidental.
