The strengthening and refurbishment of the central North Island's Makatote Viaduct is one of 119 global projects shortlisted for an engineering award.

The project was designed by Opus International Consultants and completed by TBS Farnsworth. It cost $13 million and finished early this year.

The viaduct has been repainted and strengthened, and should last another 50 years. Trains have been able to pass over it, at reduced speed, throughout the refurbishment.

It's one of 43 engineering projects shortlisted for The Institute of Structural Engineers' 2017 Structural Awards. Other New Zealand entries are the seismic strengthening of the Majestic Centre in Wellington and of the Christchurch Art Centre.

Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on November 17, in London.
