Wanganui Agricultural Science student Lydia Cave (right) has won one of two Farmlands scholarships worth $2500 each.
The 22-year-old, about to complete her Honours year at Massey University, Palmerston North, is passionate about agricultural research and science. Her plan is to work towards a PHD in Agricultural Science.
Lydia grew up on
the family farm a 200ha sheep and beef farm in in Westmere, and says: "I want to be able to help farmers improve their farms, their stock and crops. I'm interested in sheep and cattle production,or possible agronomy, and the efficiency of different crops for farmers."
Farmlands spokesperson, Allister Bathgate, said the scholarships are awarded to high achievers who demonstrated a strong work ethic. The scholarship is named after Farmlands founding director and 20-year chairman, Tom Cranswick. His passion and dedication was a major influence in the establishment of the co-operative in 1962.
"Lydia had impressed us with her passion for the industry and her belief that her future is in making a considerable contribution to returns, competitiveness and productivity of the agricultural sector. It was gratifying to see so much potential, energy and a passion for the agricultural sector in the next generation. It was difficult to pick only two recipients from the very high quality applicants."
This year's other winner was Waipukurau agricultural student, Andy Lee.
